'Right By My Side' is a video that portrays two lovers enjoying the company of one another. It's both a narrative based music video and a performance based music video.
It is also a performance based video because the artists, Chris Brown and Nicki Minaj are performing the song in front of a grey back-drop.
The video does conform to Andrew Goodwin's theory.
-The music video does demonstrate the characteristics on an R&B video. R&B video's usually portray the finer things in life: expensive cars, the spending of a lot of money, an attractive female within the video, smoking etc.
-There is a relationship between the visuals and the lyrics as it is a narrative music video.
-There is a relationship between the visuals and the music because the editing is at the same pace as the music and so is the way the artists dance in it as well.
-However, the video challenges Goodwin's theory that an artist will have a motif that recurs within every video that the artist does in order to be easily recognised. Now, Nicki Minaj is known for her extravagant dressing and hairstyles, but in this video it is evident that she has covered up more and created a more 'PG' video than she normally does. I would say that her usual motif is being raunchy, noticeable and black barbie-like. In this video she is presented as wealthy woman that enjoys the company of her lover. She isn't dressed in a way that parents would see as inappropriate which is what she usually does in her other videos. I believe that this video in particular was her way of softening up her image and making it an easier form of entertainment for people of all ages to enjoy.
Ope, you have applied the theory effectively in order to explore the video. You have identified how it conforms to Goodwin's theory and interestingly you have also used the theory to explore the changes in the artist Nicki Minaj's common style in order to attract a wider audience. Good use of the theory as a foundation to explore wider issues.
